Throwing a Green Halloween Party
Halloween is a favorite for so many people – costumes, parties, candy – what more could you ask for, right? Well, this year we actually want to ask for a little less… Less waste that is.
There’s a way to throw a killer (pun intended) Halloween party without killing the environment. It all comes down to planning ahead and knowing what to look for.
Sustainable Halloween Party Planning
When throwing a green Halloween party, you’ll need to consider a few key things.
- Decorations
- Food, Drink, & Serving
- Events & Activities
Decorations
Any good party is decorated to the max, right? Well, you can still have that without relying on the wasteful decorations that so many do. And, if you think ahead and invest a little more time in DIY decorations, you could save a lot of money too!
Try to use decorations that are ideally compostable – if not, try for reused and reusable decorations. For the decorations you do use, always aim for materials that are recyclable so you can properly dispose of them at the end of their lifespan.

Food, Drink, & Serving
One of the most wasteful aspects of most parties is the meal service. It can be easy to opt for disposable plates, silverware, napkins, cups, etc. to make cleanup a breeze. But that’s not the right answer for sustainability.
Try to opt for non-disposable silverware, plates, and cups. This will require some additional cleanup and dish washing, but it’s worth it.
A great option is to recruit some help ahead of time so you can ensure you have clean dishware for everyone throughout the party.
Washable and reusable paper towels are a great option to consider as well, which you can throw right in the wash after dinner.
Events & Activities
There are endless possibilities for activities at a Halloween party. From costume contests, to bobbing for apples, dancing, and so much more. With so many choices, there are plenty of great zero waste options for you to pick from for your party this year.
Consider making sustainability your party theme! This can add a lot of fun and get your guests thinking with the right mindset. You could even give out prizes for the most eco-friendly costumes.
Whatever you choose to do, try to focus on activities that don’t require too many extra supplies, especially if they’re disposable or single-use.
Enjoy your green Halloween!
